The Beginning – June 1966, a group of yachtsmen at the Boatel Marina dock (now the Tugboat) was laughing, telling jokes and having a great time. A brainstorm – why not start a “FUN CLUB” for boaters? A room was offered by the Boatel and the club, with 13 members, was initiated. Over 50 years later, the Club burgee can be seen along the East and West coasts with members enjoying the “FUN CLUB” and its activities year around.
FROM THE BRIDGE ----
Welcome to the Down East Yacht Club’s 2022 Season!
As we cruise towards the boating season, the days are growing longer and warmer. SaltyPaws is getting ready to leave her winter berth in New Jersey for one of the best harbors on the Maine coast, Boothbay Harbor!
We will commence our 57th season of club activities with a return to DiMillo’s On The Water in Portland Maine. With P/C Bill George and Anne George as hosts, cocktail hour begins at noon on Saturday, May 21, 2022 and is followed by DiMillo’s famous Captain’s Buffet. Enjoy good food, excellent company, and spectacular views of Portland’s inner harbor.
As we get busy with this season’s Club activities, I encourage all members to commit to spending their time well with the DEYC. Establish strong friendships, show up eagerly to activities, help out whenever you can, and have fun. Our social functions are centered around picnics and gatherings often at members' homes, and boating activities include cruises to various places along the Maine coast. The DEYC approach is quite unique in that our social and boating activities result in lots of fun for minimal expense. I encourage you all to take an active part in our scheduled events.
I also ask you to volunteer if you’d like to help out by serving on the board of directors, leading as an officer, hosting an event, or serving on a committee. To locate information about current DEYC committees, please see the Roster Index page. Additionally, the Roster’s Schedule of Events page will pinpoint several opportunities to get involved. As Commodore, I feel strongly that it is my responsibility to cultivate and strengthen a strong network of volunteers. Do not hesitate to contact me: 917.575.5754 or via email at
The Schedule of Events for 2022 are outlined in the 2022 Roster that will be distributed at the Commodore’s Lunch and Launch Party. The events are also posted to our website www.downeastyachtclub.com. Email communications are sent periodically throughout the season announcing the details of each event. Be sure to put upcoming events on your calendar!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues on the Bridge, V/C Brent Pope and P/C Susan Pope and R/C Aaron Rugh and Suzanne Rugh. In addition, thank you to my Officers, Board of Directors, F/C Kristin King and Dan King, and Club Administrator Kate Winslow. The success of the DEYC depends on the energy and hard work each of you contributes!
On behalf of all DEYC members, I would like to thank those who have served on various committees and hosted winter gatherings, and those who will give their time and home in order to provide for our activities this summer. Your enthusiasm and willingness to volunteer truly bring the Down East Yacht Club to life and make it the "Fun Club" it is.
Welcome aboard in 2022! May we enjoy fair weather, smooth cruising, and good friendship for the coming season. I hope to see you soon at the 2022 summer functions!
